Mali which capital is Bamako stretches out on a surface area of 1 241 000 square kilometers. It is a landlocked territory located in West Africa and it is bordered by 7 countries: Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania.

It comprises 8 administrative regions: Kayes, Koulikoro, Sikasso, Ségou, Mopti, Timbuktu, Gao and a district: Bamako. Its relief is mainly constituted of plateaus and plains and Mount Hombori is the culminating point at 1155 m. There are three types of climate in Mali: -Sudanese in the south (humid tropical climate).

The vegetation is the savannah sprinkled with forests. - Sahelian in the west and center (half-humid tropical climate). In this zone, the shrubby plain, dominated by grass and thorny trees meets the wooded steppe. -Saharan in the North (dry tropical climate). Some thorny shrubs grow here.

The country is crossed by the Niger river(4200kms of which 1700 in Mali).

With a population of 11.9 inhabitants, Mali is a medley of cultures where different ethnic groups live together using 13 languages. French is one of the official languages. The most common languages are Bambara, Sénoufo, Sarakolé, Dogon, Fulani, Songhai, Tamasheq and Arabic. Traditional creeds (animists 9%) survive near Islam (90%) and Christians (1%).
